Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

We’re not relying on offsets or traded certificates to make a difference. 100% PPA backed renewable electricity means we’re directly supporting a community of renewable generators, and powering a sustainable future.

We use Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to buy electricity from our community of generators. This increases the amount of sustainable energy that we source, and means we know exactly where our energy comes from. It also means we’re giving money back to the people powering our futures.

We can trace all the renewable electricity we use back to our UK-based community of renewable generators.

The independent generators we use are all over the UK, from Scotland to Cornwall.

Smart meter Installation

Generally, no. But the industry is now only making smart meters, so there is limited availability of older meter types.

Some customers with an RTS (Radio Teleswitch Service) meter will need to have a smart meter installed before June 2025. Or they could lose their heating and hot water controls. If you’re an RTS customer, we’ll contact you soon to arrange a replacement meter

Smart meters help to reduce our carbon emissions as a nation. They help to create a smart energy system which allows us to better match supply with demand, and integrate more renewable energy sources such as wind and solar into the system. These forms of generating energy create less air pollution and emit significantly less carbon into the atmosphere.

They’re for both. So, if we supply both fuels to your property, we’ll replace both meters – usually on the same visit, to make things as easy as possible. You'll only need one In-Home Display to view both your gas and electricity use.

If we only supply one fuel, then we'll still install a smart meter for that one supply. You'll need to speak to the other supplier to get the second smart meter installed.

Smart meters can't collect personal information like your name, address, or bank account details. Your meter can only collect meter readings, supply numbers and the meter serial number, which are protected by strict UK and EU product safety laws.

Yes, as long as you’re the one paying the bills. It’s a good idea to let your landlord know before going ahead with installation.

Smart meters give you more control over your energy use in multiple ways.
They provide accurate readings, so you only pay for the energy you actually use. With your In-Home Display and the Greenolite app, you can easily monitor your home's energy consumption.
This lets you track your spending in real-time and understand which areas use the most energy. These valuable insights can guide you in making smarter energy choices and cutting unnecessary usage.

From 2022 energy suppliers were targeted by the UK government to install a specific amount of smart meters each year.

This year’s target for Greenolite is to install 707,954 smart meters, broken down as:

Domestic credit smart meters:

Gas: 259,673
Electric: 260,085
Total: 519,758

Domestic PAYG smart meters:

Gas: 106,064
Electric: 82,132
Total: 188,196

Solar Panels

Solar panels are around 95% silicone (including the most common monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film designs). This semiconductor material is perfect for the job because it’s cost-efficient, easy to use, and really durable.

The other 5% is usually made up of an anti-reflective glass coating, metal, wiring, and a plastic/polymer frame – to mount the panels on a roof or secure them to the ground.

Not necessarily. Amazingly enough, solar panels produce power on cloudy days too. Even if it’s snowing or hailing, your solar panels can still generate electricity, so long as there’s a bit of light. That said, solar panels will perform at their very best when it’s sunniest.

There are ways to make your solar panels more effective. You should install them on a south-facing roof ideally, where they’ll catch the most rays. (We wouldn’t recommend installing solar panels on a north-facing roof.) It’s also best to install them at a 30 to 40-degree angle.

Solar panels are a big investment, so it’s reassuring to know they last a long time. Most will give you a good 25 to 30 years of power. And you can get a generous 40 to 50 years with some of the latest models.

If solar panels suit your home and budget, they’re one of the smartest choices you can make. Here’s why:

Lower Your Energy Bills
Generate your own electricity and reduce your monthly energy costs significantly.

Earn from Extra Power
Sell any unused electricity back to the grid and make the most of your solar setup.

Support a Greener Planet
Solar power is clean and renewable, helping to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment.

Protect Against Rising Costs
As traditional energy prices rise, solar energy offers long-term price stability and savings.

Reliable, Long-Term Solution
Solar panels are built to last, providing dependable power for 25 years or more.

Boost Your Home’s Value
Properties with solar installations are often more appealing to buyers and can increase in value.

You only need planning permission for solar panels if your home is listed or in a conservation area. If that’s the case, get in touch with your Local Planning Authority to find out more. Solar panels are also subject to building regulations. Our certified installers will complete any necessary checks before fitting your panels.
